National School Counseling Week. Taking place from 5th to 9th February 2024
School counselors represent an academic and emotional lifeline for many young people. Not only do they provide vital mental health support, but school counselors help kids navigate the complexities of growing up, assist with career planning, provide academic guidance, and much more. According to recent findings from Indiana, schools with at least one counselor per 250 students achieved 18 points higher on their SAT mathematics scores and 19 points higher on their SAT verbal scores than schools with fewer available counselors.
Despite playing such a valuable role in the school system, school counselors are often overlooked. A survey carried out a few years ago found that, if taxes were raised to support public schools, members of the public would prioritize teachers, supplies, extracurriculars, infrastructure and new schools above counselors. So, how can we ensure school counselors gain the recognition and support they deserve?
Enter: National School Counseling Week. Taking place from 5th to 9th February 2024, this week-long celebration aims to improve awareness of school counselors’ amazing contributions to academic success and student well-being. In addition to educating the public, National School Counseling Week is about alerting the education community to the benefits of investing in school counselors and ensuring they have the resources they need to thrive.
From special recognition ceremonies to morale-boosting exercises, schools and districts around the country will be celebrating their unsung heroes this February. Organizations like the American Counseling Association are also celebrating by making a wealth of informative resources available to school counselors.
